Are you a part of the Afrikaans rennaissance?

What the fuck is that? Afrikaans people are busy evolving into a new race. The old ones are dying off and the clever ones are living longer. I am part of that, the new Afrikaner... rennaissance sounds so old.

Compare Cape Town to Johannesburg.
It's better in lots of ways, but crime is crime and it's everywhere. It also not did help my drinking problem and my views on social gatherings. But it's good down here, I'm not complaining, even though all my plans did not work out. Life is like that though...

Your new graphics for Familia were taken out of a sketch book. What were the ideas behind what we chose and what do you think of with each graphic ie. Malevolant / Knife / Dino-Realist.

I don't think there is ever any idea or concept really, the knife one was the first time I traced an object and added to my other drawings, which in this case was some matches that were lying on the table. I liked the contradiction of the smooth machine-like traced style with my other sketchy freehand style. That knife I did in Durban end of last year with you guys. I also traced it on Mark's belly in red that same night. 'Malevolant' I drew when I was in Durban again, about two weeks later. The red bits were meant to be a car, the front of a Ford actually, but then I scrapped it and started drawing these people out of the M&G. I still have no clue what that word means and it was in one of the sub-headings. I added the 'metal' becuase I figured you get all kinds of metal music these days and if I could choose I would listen to 'Malevolant Metal'. The 'Dino-Realist Cult' is for all the Christians out there who think that evolution does not exist... they see it as a cult. I mean seriously, do they think all the dinosaur bones were planted there by the Nazis and the communists? So yeah at the end of the day the drawings just happen and are mostly about visual encounters about certain parts of my life... I gave away all the drawings from that sketchbook - about 45 of them - and I lost the book somewhere with about another 10 drawings in it.

How do you get around CT?
At one stage I skated with my longboard all around when I was living more central, but I live in Woodstock now and the fuckers broke my car's window and nicked it... so now I got to get a new one.

When was the last time you rode a regular size board?
A while ago... I mess around on people's boards every now and then but I'm too into the old big and soft wheels again 'cause you can roll anywhere with them.

Do you consider yourself a skateboarder today?
Not really, I mean I still follow it and watch the videos and stuff. Only thing is that I still view constructions out of that point. Skateboarding allows you to look at your environment from a completely different angle than most humans.

Give us a brief synopsis of your skateboard history.
I will give all the main skate spots; Randpark Ridge bus stop, Randridge Mall (OG Crew), Cresta (OG Crew), Waterfront, Southbank (London), Meanwhile (London), St Albans (St Albans), Love Park (Philly), Miami (beachfront)... so yes people, it does take you places... there are loads more.

Devo or Talking Heads?
That's a trick question... I would not compare them actually even though in some ways they are very similar. They both released their first albums in 1977 and the were both made up out of art fags - genius art fags. Talking Heads made more commercially viable music but still remained alternative... but Devo went a bit psycotic with their de-evolution theories which I support completely. As I said there is no doubt that both David Byrne and Mark Mothersbaugh are highly evolved humans. Devo has never really stopped touring and still play with basically the same line up they started with. People are only starting to get Devo now really and their records will be worth more than gold in the near future. Both the Heads and Devo were more than just bands - they made people aware that it's OK to think and be an individual... Bands don't make music like that any more...

You sent me a text a while ago proclaiming Beneath The Remains [Sepultura] to be the greatest metal album ever to be made by mortal men. Are you still of this opinion?
It is an angelic piece of work now... look I was a bit drunk and emotional at the time so I can't remember if I said it was greatest metal album of all time but it would definately be in the top five. It is a masterpiece and I cant find anything wrong with it. It is everything that a metal album should be and I will defend it with my life. Max Cavalera is in his prime and the album still sends chills down my spine with songs like Inner Self...

INNER SELF

"WALKING THESE DIRTY STREETS
WITH HATE IN MY MIND
FEELING THE SCORN OF THE WORLD
I WON'T FOLLOW YOUR RULES
BLAME AND LIES, CONTRADICTIONS ARISE
BLAME AND LIES, CONTRADICTIONS ARISE
NONCONFORMITY IN MY INNER SELF
ONLY I GUIDE MY INNER SELF
I WON'T CHANGE MY WAY
IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY
I LIVE MY LIFE FOR MYSELF
FORGET YOUR FILTHY WAYS ..."

I must admit that I'm a bigger Slayer fan and Slayer is the band that any metal genre based musicians should measure themselves to. Don't even waste your time with all the other garbage. If you're gonna listen to metal then listen to metal...

Do you have any aspirations as an artist?

Some days yes and some days no... Most people dont even know that I do art. I have given away about 90% of all my work. At one stage I really thought I could make it and even tried, but I get bored with doing the same type of work all the time. I change all the time. Like right now I'm just illustrating all the time with pens and markers like the stuff on the boards and a couple of years ago I was only painting giant pieces of wood... and then inbetween I would not do any art at all. I did a lot of photo's with my mobile phone at one stage - hundreds and hundreds of them and made these online mgazines. I only do stuff if I feel it's relevant and I probably wont make any money off my art ever because I give it away the whole time... My paintings ended up all over the world. This might sound weird but it takes a lot out of me to be creative and it drains me so much that I steer away from it most of the time. I walk away from it feeling kind of hurt in a way. I am a very confused individual really.

How did the name St[e]ak surface?
When I started skating not a lot of Afrikaans guys were skating at all. Some skaters used to call me bonehead... ha ha ha, or like Brandon Marsh who called me 'clutch plate'. He had a friend called Danny Olson that used to skate with us. He was stoned the one time and called me 'Steakfarm' as it was similar to my name Stefan... see. And then Guy de Villiers and Mcleod added the 'No idea' to my surname - Naude. Since then it has stuck and people all over the world know me as Steak and I've signed all my art with that name since then... It did change briefly to 'Snake' becuase I puked on Guy's carpet and covered it with a poster! Ha ha ha ha!

Favourite Andy Howell graphic?
Molotov kid. Any one of that early New Deal stuff is amazing and made me want to draw and be creative.

Favourite '80's rapper?
Marcel Theo Hall (born April 8, 1964 in Harlem, New York) better known by his stagename Biz Markie. He is a rapper, DJ, and comedian. The Biz is the best - I love him. He can take out any MC just by mumbling. His version of Elton John's "Benny and the Jets" is legendary. There are loads of rappers from the 80's that stand out way more than all this new rubbish with their overproduced videos and crap. Fuck 50c!!! Ice T will fill his seven bullet holes with piss any day.

When was the last time you went to church?

I know where you are going with this one and no, I'm not going to lash out at the Christians... my family are very devoted and believe that I am going to burn in the eternal flames of the everlasting abyss... like being backstage at a Slayer concert. I'm against every form of organised religion - we don't need religion at all as it is the biggest killer and promoter of mind-control and fear on this planet today. It's the only thing wrong with humanity and if we can find a way to remove it, the earth would be such a good place to live in. But how do you get rid of thousands of years of brainwashing... and if you see how Muslim's strap bombs to themselves to prove a point imagine what Afrikaans Christian fanatics would do to defend their faith.... fucking hell. Oh and to answer your question I have not been in church in over 15 years. If you are looking for the truth look no further than www.zeitgeistmovie.com.
